The Patek Philippe Grand Complications 5204R-011 unites two of the most demanding complications in watchmaking: a split-seconds chronograph and a perpetual calendar, both driven by the manually wound Caliber CHR 29-535 PS. The split-seconds, or rattrapante, mechanism allows the wearer to time two simultaneous events independently using an additional chronograph hand that can be stopped, read, and then snapped back to catch up with the running hand. Adding a perpetual calendar with moon phase to this already complex architecture required Patek to develop a movement with over 500 components. The 40mm rose gold case houses all of this without feeling overwrought, and the black dial with its railway-track minute scale presents the multiple subdials and apertures with remarkable clarity given the density of information.

The 5204R is built for the collector who considers a standard chronograph insufficiently complex and a perpetual calendar alone too passive. This is an interactive complication, meant to be used, with pushers at 2, 4, and 10 o'clock that operate the chronograph and rattrapante functions. Direct competitors are virtually nonexistent at this combination of complications: the Lange Double Split comes closest, and the A. Lange Datograph Perpetual offers chronograph plus perpetual without the rattrapante. Vacheron Constantin's Traditionnelle Split-Seconds Chronograph also omits the perpetual calendar. In this rarefied space, the 5204R stands essentially alone.

At $292,750 MSRP and a secondary market price near $270,000, the 5204R trades slightly under retail, which is unusual for a Patek Philippe grand complication. This reflects the extremely selective audience for rattrapante perpetual calendars rather than any deficiency in the watch itself. For collectors, the current market pricing makes this reference arguably the most compelling value proposition in the Patek Philippe catalog: over 500 hand-finished components, two supreme complications, and the Patek seal, for less than the retail price of a time-and-date Nautilus on the grey market.
